Krakow takes a step towards the future with life science!

The company Kraków Nowa Huta Przyszłości S.A. invites the Jagiellonian Center of Innovation (Jagiellońskie Centrum Innowacji Sp. z o.o.) to cooperate on the Kraków – Nowa Huta Przyszłości project.

On 9 March 2016, President of the Management Board of Kraków Nowa Huta Przyszłości S.A., Mr Artur Paszko, and President of Jagiellońskie Centrum Innowacji Sp. z o.o., Mr Paweł Błachno, signed a letter of intent to work together on a project involving the construction of specialist research infrastructure, referred to as Life Science Park II, and site preparation work for greenfield infrastructure projects to be undertaken by life science firms.

As part of their joint efforts, Kraków Nowa Huta Przyszłości S.A. will acquire and make available to Jagiellońskie Centrum Innowacji Sp. z o.o., serviced plots of land on which Life Science Park II is eventually intended to be built. Current plans envisage that by the end of 2016, as part of the delivery of the first stage of the project, Kraków Nowa Huta Przyszłości S.A. will make available to Jagiellońskie Centrum Innowacji Sp. z o.o. land having an area of 2 hectares as a minimum, with an option to increase the area to as much as 20 hectares over the coming years. Jagiellońskie Centrum Innowacji Sp. z o.o. will take steps to develop, on the land provided to it, research and office facilities, conference facilities as well as social infrastructure for Life Science Park II, which is expected to result in the science park being put to business use. Plans for the project, intended for completion over the next few years, provide for a possible extension of Life Science Park II to include new buildings with a total laboratory and office area of ca. 20,000 m2.

These efforts are expected to result in further development of Krakow's district of Nowa Huta and creation of new jobs. It is in this largest of Krakow's districts that science will meet business to create new opportunities for further development of both the city and the whole region.

- "Kraków - Nowa Huta Przyszłości" project is one of Krakow's key initiatives designed to benefit both the city and the Małopolskie Province, and Life Science Park II forms part of it. We have ambitious plans and worthy goals, the most significant of which is to revitalize, to an extent hitherto unknown, brownfield land to create new jobs. The selection of Jagiellońskie Centrum Innowacji as our partner for this life science project was a natural choice. Given its business profile, JCI has unique expertise and experience in building and managing such infrastructure - says Artur Paszko, President of the Management Board of Kraków Nowa Huta Przyszłości S.A.

The two companies will collaborate to raise funding necessary to deliver the project. Mr Paweł Błachno, Board President of President of Jagiellońskie Centrum Innowacji Sp. z o.o. expressed his satisfaction at the offer to do business together. - We are open to considering an additional location and we are happy at the prospect of working with the city and provincial authorities, particularly on such a spectacular project. If everything goes as planned, by the end of this year we expect to launch efforts to find potential partners and tenants for Life Science Park II. As early as now I would like to take this opportunity and encourage life science firms to track the progress of this project. He adds: - At the same time we must exercise caution. Obviously we are keen to repeat the success of the Life Science Park, located next to the university campus. Above all, however, we are going to be realistic and only consider what the real market place has to offer.

The signing of the letter of intent paves a new way for further development of Krakow's largest district – Nowa Huta. Life Science Park II is to be established on the site of the “Branice Science and Technology Park”, one of the four initiatives being delivered as part of the “Kraków - Nowa Huta Przyszłości” project. This project involves completion of four separate tasks:

  • Branice Science and Technology Park,
  • Logistics Center – a business activity zone,
  • Large-scale outdoor cultural event center “Centrum Wielkoskalowych Plenerowych Wydarzeń Kulturalnych Błonia 2.0”,
  • Przylasek Rusiecki – a leisure and recreation area, with complementary services.

The conceptual assumptions for the project are based on mutual synergy between these areas and investment programs. The four locations will be connected by “Szlak Nowej Huty Przyszłości” (Nowa Huta of the Future Trail) which will serve as both a physical and cultural link between these areas. The trail, designed as a walking and cycling route on the one hand and an educational trail and promotional walk on the other, will provide users with information on Nowa Huta's innovations, environmental policies, history and culture.
